Kairos 27 will take place November 2-5, 2017. This is a joint youth ministry opportunity with St. Cletus, St. Francis Xavier, and St. John of the Cross Parishes. Our parishes come together to support this peer ministry in action. This experience is open to high school juniors and seniors.
The retreat will be filled on a first come, first served basis, so please do not delay in turning in your registration!
Our new year of ministry will begin with a bonfire for all high school teens on Sunday, October 1st from 6 :30-7 :30pm in the St. Cletus courtyard. Come visit with friends, roast some marshmallows, and hear about what youth ministry can offer you throughout the year ahead !
Now that school has started, it is time to think about how you can fit reflection and rejuvenation into your routine ! As plans take shape for the upcoming school year, consider joining Encounter. In the midst of busy schedules and heavy workloads, it can be even more important to take time to stop and reflect about God’s role in your life and to share these experiences with others. Groups will gather to serve our local communities in various ways throughout the year as a way to live out our faith. Stay tuned for details, and contact Elizabeth to get on the email list for regular updates !
This year, St. Cletus, St. Francis Xavier, and St. John of the Cross will all combine efforts to offer a retreat to all freshmen and sophomores ! This retreat takes place January 12-14th, 2018 and is sure to be a fun-filled time of games and outdoor winter fun as well as a time of deep reflection and connection with peers to allow teens to become more aware of the way God is working in their lives ! Stay tuned for registration details to be shared soon !
Church League basketball allows high school students to play competitive basketball against other area churches. Registration for boys’ teams typically begins in early October. So far, we only have one of eight coaches needed. Each team needs two coaches who establish full compliance with Protecting God’s Children. If you are interested in helping with this fun ministry, contact Elizabeth. Registration for players begins in late September. Registration for teams may not open until coach positions are filled !
Do you love working with kids ? The St. Cletus Religious Education program is looking for volunteers to serve as classroom aides for the RE classes on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings. Contact Barb Campbell, DRE, for more info ! email@example.com
“Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence…” (1 Pt 3:15)
Each year the Archdiocese of Chicago seeks nomination of high school teens who have exemplified leadership qualities in a variety of ministries within youth ministry and within the parish at large. This year we recognized two dozen teens who have not only remained committed to their ministry roles but also have gone above the minimum requirements to share their faith the community around them. These individuals have sought out ways to share that the reason for their hope is Christ, and they share their faith with gentleness and reverence.
This past weekend, we recognized these high school teens at the 9:30 mass with certificates of appreciation signed by Bishop Manz. Following the mass, the teens and their families were invited to attend a delicious brunch reception in Morrissey Hall. This was a lovely celebration of the vibrancy of teen participation in our parish and in our Church.
This group of teens is not an all-inclusive list of the dozens of teens involved in parish life, and while we cannot recognize every teen individually, our parish is in gratitude for your decision to serve as you do. I also want to thank our pastor, Fr. Bob, as well as Fr. Ken and Fr. Lorenzo, Deacon Stuart and Deacon Jesus, who have supported teens in ministry. I thank other parish staff, who welcome teens to be part of parish life through the Religious Education program, social concerns ministry, as well as liturgical and music ministries. Parents, I also want to thank you! I know it takes encouragement and dedication on your part to coordinate schedules and priorities so that teens can remain active in parish life on top of other commitments, and we are so grateful. Thank you!
There will be a second collection after all masses the weekend of June 3rd and 4th. This collection will support youth ministry to help us with our fundraising efforts for our summer service trip to South Bend, IN. Our funds will help cover the cost of renting vans to reach our destination and travel to and from our service sites as well as to cover the cost of registration for teens and adult volunteers. Thank you in advance to all parishioners for their prayerful support and financial contributions to make it possible for our teens to follow the Holy Spirit’s prompting to respond to the Gospel by serving God’s people through this week-long service commitment.
Join us on Monday, June 5th for a mini-retreat focused on Uncovering Gifts! Take some time to discover what gifts may be hiding within you and then discern the ways you can put those gifts to use. All teens welcome who have completed at least one year of high school. Whether you have been a leader in the past in youth ministry and want a capstone to your experience, or plan to be a leader in the future and are exploring the ways you will lead, or have little or no experience in ministry at all, this event is for you! The retreat will be held at St. John of the Cross from 10-2. RSVP to Elizabeth Tomasek at firstname.lastname@example.org or to Katie Hayes at email@example.com by June 1st is preferable.
